In the arid landscapes of western Rajasthan, where rainfall is scarce and temperatures can reach 48°C, a quiet revolution is taking place. Women farmers — many of whom had never managed a household budget, let alone a business — are leading one of India's most inspiring organic farming cooperatives.
Swanand's moringa powder comes from a cooperative of 350 women farmers in the Jodhpur district. What started as a small pilot project with 20 women has grown into a model for sustainable, women-led agriculture.
Why Moringa?
Moringa oleifera, known as the "drumstick tree" or *sahjan*, is one of the most nutrient-dense plants on earth. Every part of the tree is useful:
- Leaves — rich in iron, calcium, vitamin C, and protein
- Pods — traditional vegetable used in curries

A Day in the Life
The day begins at dawn. Women walk to the moringa groves — some travelling up to 3 kilometres — carrying baskets on their heads. The leaves are harvested by hand, carefully selecting only the mature ones to ensure the plant continues to thrive.
By mid-morning, the leaves arrive at the processing centre, where they are washed in clean water and spread on solar drying racks. The cooperative invested in solar dryers — a critical innovation that preserves the leaves' nutrients far better than sun-drying on the ground.
The Impact
Before the cooperative, most of these women had no independent income. Today:
- Average monthly income: ₹8,000–12,000 per woman
- 100% of members have bank accounts (most for the first time in their lives)
- 90% of children in cooperative households attend school regularly
- 30 women have received loans to start their own small businesses
